PNGO condemns the administrative detention of its National Advocacy Coordinator & calls upon his immediate release

RamallahNovember 14th, 2019The Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network (PNGO) condemns the Israeli occupation court in Ofer decision to detain PNGO national advocacy coordinator Ashraf Abu Iram; who was abducted by theIsraeli occupying authorities on November 7th at Al Karama crossing during his return from an international training abroad. Witnesses said “he was detained in a brutal manner and taken to unknown destination before his family was informed of his transfer to administrative detention for four months”.

Administrative detention is a procedure that allows the Israeli occupying military to target residents in the occupied Palestinian territory and hold them hostage indefinitely on secret information without charging them or allowing them to stand a fair trial.

In practice, Palestinians can be detained for months, if not years, under administrative detention orders, without ever being informed about the reasons or length of their detention. Palestinians continue to have no effective means by which to challenge their administrative detention therefore leaving them vulnerable and unprotected.

In the last few months attacks against Civil Society Organizations including humanitarian, development and human rights have been systematically targeted by the Israeli occupying forces in various forum such smear campaigns, physical attacks intimidating & punitive measures against CSO staff most notably the arrest and detention of staff.

PNGO call upon the international community & United Nations to assume its responsibility and put an end to Israeli’s illegal policy of mass arbitrary detention of Palestinian citizens including our colleague Ashraf Au Iram.

EU member states should raise cases of administrative detainees’ immediately with the Israeli government under the EU-Israel political dialogue
