Urgent Appeal to the UN Stop the Imminent Catastrophe of Fuel Shortage in Gazan Hospitals

Ramallah/Gaza 25-10-2023 

Two days ago, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the collapse of the health sector in the Gaza Strip, as a result of the brutal shelling that targeted hospitals, including Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, resulting in about 500 martyrs, and hundreds of innocent civilians injured, most of whom were forced to leave their homes, after they turned into rubbles, where hundreds remain trapped. These continued attacks on hospitals and medical staff left a number of them out of service. Other hospitals have also been threatened to be bombed, including Al-Quds Hospital, and Abu Yousef Al-Najjar.

 According to the report issued by the Gazan health sector on Wednesday morning, the remaining amount of fuel will last at best for a few hours. This doesn’t only threaten the cessation of hospitals, but also all life-saving facilities. This will end in an inevitable humanitarian catastrophe.

Hospitals, which hold more than 7,000 injured and patients, will become completely inoperable. This will lead to large numbers of victims, especially regarding those who need treatment as well as patients with chronic diseases, in need of dialysis, and so forth. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, also announced the cessation of its facilities, where there are about 6,000 displaced people in more than 150 facilities in the Gaza Strip.

We, the Palestinian NGOs Network, make this urgent appeal to the United Nations and its institutions, to work in every possible way to save the health sector, and not to remain silent until the disaster expands. 

We call for immediate serious steps to apply pressure on the Israeli occupation, to bring in fuel in order to restore the work of hospitals and medical centers that have become incapacitated, and lost the ability to provide services due to the large numbers of injured. We also urge that the international community demand an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people by the Israeli occupation, which are flouting all international norms and conventions.
