The Palestinian non governmental organizations network Issues a Fact Sheet on “Youth Roles and Effectiveness in Humanitarian Responses in Areas at Risk of Confiscation, Displacement and Settler Violence in the West Bank”
As part of its efforts to strengthen the role of Palestinian youth and support their participation as key humanitarian actors, the Palestinian non governmental organizations network issued a field-based fact sheet in the first half of October. Titled “Youth Roles and Effectiveness in Humanitarian Responses in Areas at Risk of Confiscation, Displacement and Settler Violence in the West Bank,” the paper examines young people’s roles in humanitarian response.
The fact sheet is one of the outputs of the project “Strengthening Palestinian Youth Influence on Humanitarian Resilience Policies and Transformative Response,” implemented by the Palestinian non governmental organizations network in partnership with ActionAid Palestine over nine months this year.
The paper was prepared in consultation with members of the Humanitarian Action Youth Group in the West Bank. Members contributed to selecting the title, defining the objectives and developing recommendations grounded in their practical field needs. The research focused on the extent to which young people are represented in humanitarian structures and can influence humanitarian decision-making.
Drawing on a field assessment documenting the group’s perspectives and related data, the paper found that approximately two-thirds of the respondents had previously been directly involved in responding to a crisis, attack or emergency. A larger proportion had helped affected households or individuals, indicating an experienced youth base whose capacity and preparedness can be further strengthened.
The paper also assessed the availability of protection and support mechanisms for young people in frontline areas threatened by displacement and settler violence. It puts forward practical recommendations to strengthen their leadership roles and participation in humanitarian decision-making.
Key challenges identified include security risks, movement restrictions imposed by the occupation, and shortages of material resources. The recommendations focus on institutionalizing youth participation, establishing a comprehensive protection system, providing flexible funding for youth-led initiatives, and strengthening the sustainability of volunteer work.
